thesixtyone makes music culture more democratic: artists upload their work for review, but, rather than allow a stuffy suit in a boardroom to decide what’s good, thousands of listeners do. The best music automagically bubbles up on our homepage where you can listen to the most popular songs for any genre. It’s a quick way to find new music for your iPod powered by pure excitement as opposed to some contrived marketing budget.
I haven’t totally figured this site out yet. It’s like a mix of a social music site and a role playing game. Artists get points when people listen to their music. After a certain amount of points, the artist “levels up” allowing them to add more music. Listeners also get points for rating artists, and can level up as well.
It’s an approach to a music site that I haven’t seen before. We’re already at level 3 and will be adding more music soon. In the meantime, head over and sign up and help us level up some more (and hopefully find some other good music at the same time).
