SinchCast: Mp3 of the Week #4 - Pain

Anyone who’s been a fan of this band for a long time (or I guess anyone who’s done their homework) knows that the song "Seven" from our self-titled album, was orginally called “Pain” and that we’ve recorded it quite a number of times. Well, it’s time to add one more recording to the list. This one comes from back in 2000, around the time we were in negotiations to sign our deal with Roadrunner Records.

We were in the process of talking to several producers about doing our first album. The first one we talked to was Pete Matthews. We met with him and listened to some of the stuff he had worked on recently and decided that he was a generally nice guy and that we’d like to persue working with him. But it’s one thing to hear someone’s past work and its another to actually work with them, so we headed down to Memphis, TN to record sort of a "test track" to see how we would work together. We did the same thing with Eddie Wohl, the result of which ended up on the Ginger Snaps soundtrack and some Roadrunner sampler CDs. This track was never released, so we figured you might like to finally hear it.

An interesting side note that we didn’t mention in the podcast… Pete Matthews was actually the guy who "discovered" Evenescance. When we were in the studio they hadn’t released their album yet and so obviously no one had heard of them. But I remember him talking about them a lot and thinking that I couldn’t imagine a band with a name like Evanescance being a well-known band. Shows how much I know. Unfortunately Pete’s involvement in our career hasn’t had the same effect, but I’m pretty sure it’s not his fault…

Hey guys, I love the podcasts. Great idea. I especially like hearing “new” songs or different versions that never made it. The banter is wonderful too, it’s nice to hear conversations about what influenced certain decisions and the stories behind different recordings. Keep it up and thanks!!

Hey, love the podcasts too.

And I have another version of Pain now! I don’t think you can ever record this too many times since every version I have has its own little facets and features you don’t see in the others.
This one I feel is heavier and the synth sound effects are more evident than the others. A really good recording.

I really like the old Diatribe version of Pain too, but um… where did the female vocals come from? I swear I heard female vocals in that one. No offense if that was you, Tony ¬_¬

The female vocals on the Diatribe version of Pain are by Heather Thompson from Tapping the Vein (http://www.tappingthevein.com)
